At Large - Dean Johnson

Dean Johnson was elected in 2015 and re-elected once again in 2019. His second term runs from 2020 to 2023. As the At-Large member of the Council, he holds the unique distinction of being the only City Council member elected by voters from across the entire City of Puyallup and represents residents in all three districts.

Heritage
Dean Johnson’s election to the Puyallup City Council echoes a longtime family heritage of five generations in Puyallup dating back to the City’s founding in 1890. His great, great grandfather, Perry Summerfield, was a prominent member of Puyallup’s early pioneer community who served on the very first city council alongside Ezra Meeker.

Beliefs
Councilmember Johnson is committed to respecting all persons and collaborating with his fellow elected officials, city staff and citizens for the betterment of Puyallup. He agrees that certain services are of paramount importance, including a high level of public safety, excellent parks, well-maintained roads and pedestrian walkways, and common-sense zoning, regulations, and policies that promote healthy neighborhoods and economic vitality. He strongly advocates for open, ethical, and accountable government and works to ensure that the public's limited resources are always put to good use.

Councilmember Johnson has pledged to approach the issue of homelessness in Puyallup in a constructive manner. He believes that the City must have a comprehensive plan to help those in need find a road to recovery in addition to protecting Puyallup's family friendly culture through public safety enforcement against theft, vandalism, littering and illegal drug use.

Councilmember Johnson ardently believes in the power of respectful communication and civility to help evolve understanding and foster collaboration. In his last re-election, he was the only candidate that had party endorsements from both Republican and Democratic elected officials, which is very difficult to attain in today's political climate. This follows his belief that while we may have differences on various issues, we can find common ground if we dare to try with courage and humility.

Councilmember Johnson believes in the freedom of speech. He believes people have a right to speak what they believe even if an opposing side believes they are wrong. Why? Because how can anyone arrive at a change of mind if their beliefs are not protected and heard in a forum that allows respectful discourse and the opportunity to have a change of heart and mind?
